H.N.I.T.H. Review – Rick Ross – Teflon Don

Old hip hop heads will say that back in the day, you street cred was everything. However, in 2010, maybe your street cred doesn’t have to have to be proven. The game has changed indeed. Before buying this album, well you might ask yourself, how can a former C.O drop albums with names like “Trilla”, “Deeper than Rap”, and the lastest installment “Teflon Don” and be met with good success? Theres a lot of things I could say to knock Rick Ross, like he needs guest appearances to sell, and he jacked Biggie’s swag, but I cant hate the player, gotta hate the game.

Sinakilloptimist Review: M.I.A. – /\/\ /\ Y /\

I give M.I.A. credit. She stands alone with her distinct sound which she creates…from her first release, Arular (named after her father, 2005), and her second release, Kala (named after her mother, 2007), she has made abstract sounding music. It’s not mainstream but it’s not foreign either. I can vividly remember listening to Arular for the first time. I had to listen to it four to five times before I could even understand the concept. With her newest release /\/\ /\ Y /\ (Maya), I was able to understand it after first listen. Her sound is not for everyone. Its not catchy hooks with monster beats, but to me, it’s cool. It’s real.

H.N.I.T.H. Review: Jay-Z – Blueprint III
“How am I a legend?/ I just got 10 number 1 albums/ Maybe now 11”
The G.O.A.T of hip hop makes another solid release with the 3rd series of The Blueprint. It serves as an example to all MCs in the game, I mean what more can he say, he is the blueprint. This album is great for a lot of reasons. 1. Jay’s Statements 2. Jay’s Lyrics 3. Good Producing & Collaborations 4. The Bangers 5. Song Placement, etc. I can make at least 20.

Drops: Clipse X Kanye X Kaws
Maaaaaaannnnnnn the Clipse is prolly one of the most slept on rap duo i mean two of the most slept on rappers in the game. Here they come with a certified banger though in Kinda Like A Big Deal. All these Kanye features have me really anxious to hear what his album is gonna sound like that he is supposedly dropping this summer. We’ll have to see. Definitely give this a listen after the break kids.
WesLexner Tech Corner: $20,000.00 Television

And now for somethin that very few of us will prolly enjoy in our own homes. This tv is 70″ of beauty. I recently saw it in action at the Sony Style store in Easton towne center in Columbus,Oh. A tear came to my eye as i was watching Quantum of Solace on a larger than life specimen of a TV.

Review & Recap: Notorious at The Montalbán

Checked out a screening of Notorious last night at Cinema Tuesdays at Nike Sportswear’s Montalbán Theater. Scene was pretty thick. Just missed the reception with MC Lyte, made it just time to catch the flick and check the Q&A session with George Tillman Jr., Derek Luke & Naturi Naughton.
I went in with low expectations and was pleasently surprised. It wasn’t great, but in the same sense wasn’t terrible

Review: Spike Lee – Miracle at St. Anna’s

The synergy that Director Spike Lee creates in Miracle at St. Anna’s is remarkable. Sometimes I ask myself the question, does the Director make the movie or does the movie make the Director? In this case, the blending of the two forces is seamless.
The movie is a slow burn, like a crock pot or a BBQ. Not that it is drawn out, on the contrary; St. Anna’s is layer upon layer of remarkable scenes. Landscape scenes, village scenes, religious and war scenes to name a few.
Review: TV on the Radio – Dear Science
Dear Science, TV on the Radio’s follow-up to 2006′s Return to Cookie Mountain-- a dense and textural album with an optimistic core– is catchier, but thornier than its predecessor. Musically, it’s an instant grabber: Handclaps crack like fireworks. TVOTR’s horns, courtesy of the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, sound punchier and brighter than ever before. Vocalists Tunde Adebimpe and guitarist/singer Kyp Malone thrive as dual frontmen: They’re dope when they’re angry, and even doper when they’re not. And David Sitek’s production is shiny and urgent, while his harsher synths and doo-dads hang back like a commentary track.

Jay-Z – Jockin’ Jay Z
He’s baaaaaack…
Kanye is rumored to be producing most, if not all, of the album. Remember back in the day when an artist would do a whole album with one producer for cohesiveness? Think classic Snoop or Jeru with Primo… and fast forward it to 2008.
Santogold & Diplo – Top Ranking: A Diplo Dub
Mad Decent’s steez has been based in multiculturalism. Podcasts, including DJ Sega / Boy 8-Bit’s mashing of genres, to Diplo’s ability to take dub step, B-More, Hyphy, Crunk, Favela, Baile funk, French house, (insert your favorite dance genre here) and make it both street and club friendly, Mad Decent has been a fantastic conduit for music lovers. Diplo’s live shows and Mixtapes have been incredible for making the artists he selects shine. This CD is no exception. Santogold already has a legacy of her own, but Diplo manages to not only build up her sound but contextualize it through 30 years of music, ranging from reggae to 80s pop to grime.
If anything, that’s what makes this mix so special and so different from Piracy Funds Terrorism (his mix with MIA). This disc is not introducing a new artist but providing a different landscape with which to listen to her music. Inclusions such as the Clash, B-52s, and Barrington Levy may seem diverse, yet with the dubbed out Diplo backdrop, they fit perfectly into the Santogold aesthetic. A tribal-esque remix by Radioclit of “Get it Up” and XXXChange’s remix of “Les Artistes”, both spectacular in their own rights, stand taller when surrounded by the classics of Desmond Dekker, Nora Dean, and Devo.
Movie: The Wackness – Review
It’s the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are pulsing with hip-hop. Set against this backdrop, Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck) spends his last summer before college selling dope throughout New York City, trading it with his shrink (Ben Kingsley) for therapy, while crushing on his step-daughter (Olivia Thirlby).
