The Handbook: The Essential Shoe Checklist (28/30)

We asked Tim Little, the shoe designer and creative director for the 140-year-old British brand Grenson, for the five shoes every man should have in his closet. “It’s a bit like choosing my five favorite songs,” says the cobbler. He, of course, recommends buying quality but offers up an old army saying to back it up: “Always spend good money on your shoes and your bed, because if you’re not in one you’re in the other.”

We’re nearing the end of winter (thank God), and there’s no better time than at the close of a season to take an inventory and overhaul your closet.
BHM: Grace Jones

Grace Jones was one of the more unforgettable characters to emerge from New York City’s hedonistic Studio 54 disco scene during the late ’70s. Born May 19, 1952, in Kingston, Jamaica, Jones studied theater at Syracuse University before launching a career as a model. Jones’ statuesque and flamboyant look proved to be a hit in the New York City nightclub scene, which led to a recording contract with Island Records in 1977. While such disco-based albums as 1977′s Portfolio, 1978′s Fame, and 1979′s Muse failed to break the singer commercially, Jones soon amassed a substantial following amongst gay men with her sexually charged live show, leading to her title at the time of “Queen of the Gay Discos.”

Drops: Muxtape – Something for Nothing

The streaming music site Muxtape has returned as a free platform for musicians to promote their music.
Emerging in a time when cassette tapes had long been an anachronism, Muxtape became a go-to site for music fans to string together their favorite songs and share the virtual mix tapes with friends and internet passers-by. Founded in early 2008, the site quickly became ensnared in licensing disputes and was shut down last August. (Freakonomics Swipe)
The Handbook: Stock Some Prosecco (27/30)

Feel like traditional French champagne is a bit rich? Prosecco, its Italian cousin, is a simple sparkling wine that’s a tad lighter and meant to be drunk young. This means you don’t have to take it as seriously and that you can often find a decent bottle for under $25.
Depending on your personal taste, look for labels that read “gentile” or “frizzante” for some slight bubbles, or “spumante,” which means a full-on fizz.
*Prosecco is the main ingredient in the Bellini—the favorite brunch beverage made from white peach puree and sparkling wine.

Photography: World Press Photo winners

World Press Photo of the Year 2008: Anthony Suau, USA, for Time. US Economy in Crisis: Following eviction, Detective Robert Kole must ensure residents have moved out of their home, Cleveland, Ohio, 26 March
US photographer Anthony Suau has won Photo of the Year at the 52nd World Press Photo contest. Suau’s winning photograph shows an armed officer of the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department moving through a home in Cleveland, Ohio, following an eviction as a result of mortgage foreclosure. As jury chair MaryAnne Golon points out, the image is “a double entendre. It looks like a classic conflict photograph, but it is simply the eviction of people from a house…. Now war in its classic sense is coming into people’s houses because they can’t pay their mortgages.” (CR Blog)
