The Handbook: Slim Down Your Shirt (13/30)
A trimmed down button-down makes you look taller and slimmer. Just ask Scott Sternberg, the designer for Band of Outsiders, who’s perfected the art of the razor-sharp yet still relaxed oxford shirt.
“You’ve got to tow the line between fitted and tight. A tight shirt pulls in places it shouldn’t and unless you’re really slim you probably can’t pull that off,” warns Sternberg. “A fitted one-or at least a Band shirt-has higher armholes and a defined waist so you don’t look like a shapeless blob.”
The Handbook: Do Some Pushups (12/30)

Not a big gym guy? No worries. When it comes to a simple workout, your best option is the humble pushup. They were good enough for your dad, even your grandfather, and for good reason. A barometer of personal fitness, pushups test your body’s core strength, engaging muscle groups in your abs, hips, legs and of course, chest and arms. The goal should be about 40, but those (especially in the beginning, can be broken into four sets of ten). Now drop and give us 20.

Stimulate the Economy: Kanye West for Louis Vuitton Sneaker
PARIS – Marc Jacobs and the Louis Vuitton men’s studio director Paul Helbers have some design competition this season. Kanye West, who was sitting front row at the Vuitton show, has designed a line of five LV sneakers. Only one design, above, was featured in the show – a monochromatic midtop with no frills, save for a quilted flap in the back, all the easier to tuck pants into. “The inspiration came from a jacket with a huge collar in the movie ‘Dune,’ ” West says. “Most sneakers focus on the tongue, so I wanted to do something different.” West knows whereof he speaks: he says he has no idea how many shoes he owns, but he does know that he routinely needs to send shipments off to storage. The LV-meets-Kanye kicks will be available at Louis Vuitton stores in June.

The Handbook: Write a Thank You Note (11/30)

As Anna Post of the Emily Post Institute explained to us once, it’s not that expressing your gratitude in an e-mail or text message is wrong exactly, “but sending a hand written note shows you took some time.” Translation: It simply means you’re lazy and cheap, while a card is “a real, tangible expression of your appreciation.”
Swipe: Rough Waves, Tougher Beaches (NYtimes)

By MATT HIGGINS
SUNSET BEACH, Hawaii – They are known as the Wolfpak or simply “the boys.” They use fear and their fists to command respect in the surf along the North Shore of Oahu, a seven-mile stretch of some of the world’s most renowned waves. At the celebrated Banzai Pipeline, they determine which waves go to whom, and punish those who breach their code of respect for local residents and the waves.
The Wolfpak’s members have tried to soften their image with charitable works, but they have learned that a hard-earned reputation can be hard to shake.

The Handbook: Fold a Pocket Square (9/31)

Traditionalists argue that menswear is a game of inches—that the smallest details can make or break a man’s look. While we may not be tried and true trads, we definitely subscribe to the less-is-more theory. Like when it comes to pocket squares. Yes, you should sport one. No, you don’t need fancy origami pleats.
