Review: Spike Lee – Miracle at St. Anna’s

The synergy that Director Spike Lee creates in Miracle at St. Anna’s is remarkable. Sometimes I ask myself the question, does the Director make the movie or does the movie make the Director? In this case, the blending of the two forces is seamless.

The movie is a slow burn, like a crock pot or a BBQ. Not that it is drawn out, on the contrary; St. Anna’s is layer upon layer of remarkable scenes. Landscape scenes, village scenes, religious and war scenes to name a few.

PROPS Rating:

Very subtle (or maybe not too) Spike weaves modern issues in a movie from the 1940’s.
The term “terrorist” is used for the Italian Partisans who are fighting the invading Germans. In other scene, S. Lee has a person of color shot repeatedly (over killed). I immediately thought of Amadou Diallo, who was shot 41 times by officers in the NYCPD.

Attention to detail is at the highest level (uniforms, cars, etc) all shot at close angles.
Be prepared to read sub-titles through out the movie. This is not your “yippee aye yeh mother-fucker” of Die Hard fame. (Great movie in it’s own right).

At the end of the day, no matter how different we think we are due to society, economic, language, education, racial differences, we as people all have the same needs out of life.  But mostly, this movie moved me in a spiritual, religious, have faith sense.

Prediction: Spike Lee gets nominated for an Oscar for Best director for this passionate work,

I too will go see this based on this review. I can’t get over Sinakill going to the theatre – that’s rare and for a grown-folks flick at that! I’m impressed.

Spike didn’t even get a sniff of a nomination, but I think it was passionate work.
I got the movie on BD (blueray disc) & rewatched it.
