Review: Spike Lee – Miracle at St. Anna’s

The synergy that Director Spike Lee creates in Miracle at St. Anna’s is remarkable. Sometimes I ask myself the question, does the Director make the movie or does the movie make the Director? In this case, the blending of the two forces is seamless.
The movie is a slow burn, like a crock pot or a BBQ. Not that it is drawn out, on the contrary; St. Anna’s is layer upon layer of remarkable scenes. Landscape scenes, village scenes, religious and war scenes to name a few.

Artist of the Week: Richard Avedon

I never get tired of looking at the photographs of Richard Avedon. The legendary lensman, who passed away in 2004, was such a master at capturing the essence of a person, and of a moment. In the new book “Performance” (Henry N. Abrams Inc.), you can see some of his most interesting subjects turning it on in front of the camera — or some folks, like Marilyn Monroe, finally turning it off so that you can catch a glimpse of the “real” person. Weekend Recap: Politics as Usual
Got together and watched the Debate. We looked like the Rainbow Coalition over there.
The “Feelin’ It’ Meter” was tripping me out. Made it hard to focus sometimes.
Lazy Afternoon Saturday. Just kicked it around the flat.
Went on the ill dummy mission Sunday through South Central looking for the Shabazz food truck. Fried fish FTW!

Stimulate the Economy: Shawl Thing
Rooted in the hallowed halls of the Ivy League and 1950s Americana, the shawl collar sweater has reemerged for fall and for good reason. Wear it on the weekend instead of a sweatshirt or pull one over a shirt and tie for an easy day at the office.
I prefer them Thick, Chunky and black (or grey). Rock it with jeans and maybe a skinny tie so no one will mistake you for someone’s Grandpa.

Stimulate the Economy: Tie It Up
It’s not that a silk tie would look out of place under your sweater or paired with a tweed vest or corduroy blazer. It’s that a wooly tie in a winter-weight fabric (think woven cashmere, tweed and flannel) just looks better. One part natty Ivy League professor and one part dapper cad about town, knot one with a crisp white oxford and call it a day. The textured ties may not add much warmth, but they feel as good as they look. And if you’re thinking that seasonal ties are superfluous, just ask those screaming pundits on TV if a man’s choice in neckwear matters. (Valet Swipe)
Notorious Trailer
For any hip-hop fan, next year’s movie featuring the deceased Christopher Wallace aka The Notorious B.I.G. represents a must-see film as it documents the life and times of some will argue one of the greatest of all time (G.O.A.T.). Rapper Gravy is cast the lead as Biggie Smalls with Derek Luke and Anthony Mackie as Sean Combs and Tupac Shakur respectively
Release date set for January 16th, 2009
Artist of the Week: Photographers – Cia de Foto
Highly stylized, poignant and emotional are words that come to mind upon first encounter with Cia de Foto’s breathtaking photographs. The São Paulo photo agency has been going strong for more than a few years now but has just launched a blog that shares news on happenings like what exciting project they’re doing next or which international photo event they’re participating in (for example, they managed the entire São Paulo Photo Week last month). Although most of the blog is in Portuguese, the pictures — spanning a variety of subjects from everyday Brazilian life to portraits — speak for themselves. (CH Swipe)

Review: TV on the Radio – Dear Science
Dear Science, TV on the Radio’s follow-up to 2006′s Return to Cookie Mountain-- a dense and textural album with an optimistic core– is catchier, but thornier than its predecessor. Musically, it’s an instant grabber: Handclaps crack like fireworks. TVOTR’s horns, courtesy of the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, sound punchier and brighter than ever before. Vocalists Tunde Adebimpe and guitarist/singer Kyp Malone thrive as dual frontmen: They’re dope when they’re angry, and even doper when they’re not. And David Sitek’s production is shiny and urgent, while his harsher synths and doo-dads hang back like a commentary track.
